Never the Same

Lying half awake beside
you, I blink to
assure myself it’s
all real . . .

The warmth of your body
replaces the chill of the air.
The heat of your breath
softens my face, lips, and hair.

You lie so close, yet
I still long for you.
I want to make
you mine before the night is through.

Our lips touch, yet we speak no
words.
The beat of our hearts, the crackle of the fire
is all that’s heard.

The night fades and
we slowly drift apart.
The sun rises, I release my
grip on your heart.

You fell from my
life, just as quickly as you came.
Now that you’re far,

I’ll never be the same.
