I Love You Lies

I beg for you to show me that you care,

but when you whisper softly
in my ear, “I love you,” my only
reaction is to become scared.

I close my eyes and turn my head,
now begging you to take back
the thing you just said.

It’s too sudden, too fast,
“I love you” is meant to be told
to someone that’s going to last.

In a month—“us” will probably
be the forgotten past.
Don’t make vows you don’t deeply mean
or promise love you don’t intend to keep.

Tell me I have a touch
like the sun
or because of me your
heart has finally won,
but please don’t ever promise
me I’m the one . . .

because I know that
your lies will shatter me . . .
I will be scarred for eternity . . .
and I’m not going to
let you take that from me . . .
never tell me
what you don’t deeply mean . . .
